LEV AB has landed a contract to design the electric high speed generator for the Ocean 100 -waste heat recovery system developed by Climeon. The system generates "electricity from cold heat", or low temperature waste heat. One of the customers is Viking Line who will install the system on Viking Grace.

Technology

Flywheels is likely the product that can benefit the most with magnetic bearings, since it does not seem to be possible to make them last very long with traditional bearings. Furthermore, ball bearings and fluid film bearings are not compatible with the vacuum environment necessary for long term energy storage in these fast spinning wheels. By combining permanent magnet bearings with electrodynamic bearings and dampers, it is possible to achieve stable and reliable levitation that does not depend on power electronics.

Products

Turbomachinery, flywheels and vacuumpumps are typical applications where high speed generators and magnetic bearings offer substantial benefits compared to traditional solutions. Reduced insurance cost due to replacement of flammable oil is an example. Reduced friction is essential in energy storage, and reduced pollution is a key factor in vacuum industry.

Meet us at ISMB 14 in Linz, Austria – August 11-14

ISMB14 is held every second year, and covers all types of magnetic bearings. The company CEO Torbjörn Lembke is a member of the international steering committee, and will also arrange a mini-seminar. Join us at the venue, or book a meeting on Friday Aug 15.

LEV is currently testing a new concept to extend the lifetime of existing hydropower stations by installing a novel magnetic thrust bearing.
We aim for a full scale system to be installed in 2016. The purpose is to reduce friction and to add vibration damping into the system during start up and during critical operating conditions.
